Dermal fillers are an injectable gel made from Hyaluronic acid, injected into the skin in various areas to help add volume and definition, fill lines and wrinkles, and create or restore lifting of the facial features. Hyaluronic acid is naturally absorbed by the body over time and the need for a “top up” will arise.

These fillers are used in a wide variety of areas on the face including lips, cheeks, chin, jaw line, temple and nose.

What happens when you have face and lip fillers?

An anaesthetic cream might be used first to numb your skin. Injections are given around the area of your face being treated, which may be then massaged depending on the treated area.

It might feel uncomfortable but should not be overly painful.

The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

The affected area may be a bit red, sore and swollen. Any swelling or bruising should settle down in a few days and can be treated with a cold compress to aid comfort.

You will be advised about what to do to help reduce the risk of side effects.

This includes not wearing make-up immediately after the procedure and avoiding alcohol, caffeine, steam and saunas, heavy exercise and the sun or sunbeds.
